<image:title>Our Blog - Premise #2: Implementing actions into your daily life. - Chiropractic Care</image:title>
<image:caption>Life is full of stressors! There are physical stressors, emotional stressors, and chemical stressors that our body has to combat and heal from on a daily basis. If you are seemly unaware that this takes place, your right!! Your autonomic nervous system, organs and tissues take care of all of this stress for you automatically. Most of this stress is healed and dealt with appropriately from day to day but some stress can overwhelm your system. Whether it is a significant event such as food poisoning, a major illness, a car accident, sports injury, or being born or something more insidious such as poor ergonomics with work, repetitive stress, or a long-standing poor diet; these stressors on the body creates an adaptation called a subluxation. From the first instalment of this blog, you learned subluxation is a mind-body adaptation into a locked stress state. Subluxation was beneficial for your health when you were adapting to the stressor that caused it, but after the stress is gone and it being fixated into your neuro-musculoskeletal system it is causing your nervous system to be in more of a constant protection state and is no longer serving you for health, recovery, and connectedness. Chiropractic care is the only profession that addresses neurological subluxations in the human body. Physical therapist, massage therapy, OT’s, and some other professions deal with different parts of the musculoskeletal system which can complicate the recovery and healing of a subluxation, but they do not adjust and reduce subluxations like a chiropractor does. Here at CJ Chiropractic in Colorado Springs, CO, we love all professions and doctors as each has their time, place, and specialty. Now knowing the principles of health, the dis-ease that subluxation has on your over-all health; we suggest having a chiropractor on your healthcare team is essential to make sure that the stress of your and your family’s past doesn’t affect the health of today!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise #2: Implementing actions into your daily life. - Mindfulness and Self-Awareness</image:title>
<image:caption>Cultivate mindfulness and self-awareness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, prayer or journaling. These practices can help you tune into your body's innate intelligence, recognize its signals, and respond accordingly. It is better to be able to hear the whispers from your body and mind than being surprised when your body starts screaming at you! By becoming more attuned to your physical, mental, and emotional states, you can make informed choices that support your well-being. Stress Management Chronic stress can disrupt the mind-body connection and interfere with the innate intelligence's ability to maintain balance and harmony. Implement stress management techniques like exercise, yoga, or engaging in hobbies and activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Prioritizing self-care and finding healthy outlets for stress can help you maintain a state of equilibrium.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise #2: Implementing actions into your daily life. - Lifestyle Choices</image:title>
<image:caption>Evaluate your lifestyle choices and make adjustments that align with Premise #2. This may include adopting a balanced diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods, getting adequate sleep, staying hydrated, having a healthy social life and engaging in regular physical activity. These lifestyle factors can support the innate intelligence's ability to function optimally and promote overall wellness. Positive Mindset Cultivate a positive mindset by practicing gratitude, focusing on your strengths, and surrounding yourself with supportive individuals. Neurons that fire together, wire together. What you put attention on will grow bigger. Thinking positively will create a way of being, a program to follow when stress enters your life. A positive mindset can/will reinforce the mind-body connection and empower your innate intelligence to work optimally. Holistic Approach Embrace a holistic approach to well-being by integrating various modalities that resonate with you, such as massage therapy, acupuncture, or energy healing techniques. These complementary practices can work in harmony with chiropractic care and support the principles of Premise #2.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 2: Restrictions of Movement and static do commonly occur in the human spine and have been scientifically defined in the literature as vertebral subluxation complex-VSC PART 1. - Our next premise that Dr. James Chestnut includes in his work that we are slowly exploring is a bit larger than some others. We will be breaking this one down into two segments to make it a bit more digestible. We will go over the validation of the term subluxation and why the chiropractic profession is the management and care of this neuro-musculoskeletal condition and provide assurance that the term of subluxation is the correct one when discussing the type of care you are receiving from a chiropractor. We will also discuss key concepts such as consciousness, innate intelligence, and chiropractic adjustments and consciousness. In part 2 we will explain and explore how to take Dr. Chestnut’s Premise #2 and apply it to your life.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 2: Restrictions of Movement and static do commonly occur in the human spine and have been scientifically defined in the literature as vertebral subluxation complex-VSC PART 1. - Subluxation</image:title>
<image:caption>It is commonplace for new patients of ours to have seen a chiropractor before but maybe they were more into physical therapy, and they NEVER mentioned what a subluxation is!! But yet, they received chiropractic adjustments, which is a modality to reduce subluxations, without telling the patient that they are adjusting subluxations! Many chiropractors will say that there is “spinal dysfunction” or “facet irritation, joint dysfunction, or facet syndrome” that they are mobilizing. However, there is hardly any research in the literature for those terms. You know what term is mentioned in literature over and over again? - Subluxation!! Why has some in the chiropractic profession used these scientifically invalid terms? Dr. Chestnut discusses that this decision is more of a politically driven decision rather than a scientifically or logically driven decision. “It is about getting acceptance into the allopathic community and getting money from third party payers who are controlled by allopathic interests and who operate exclusively in the allopathic paradigm.” Therefore, chiropractors who are not practicing philosophical and scientific evaluation and care of subluxation are not more “evidence-based chiropractors”. In fact, they are less evidenced-based chiropractors and are in essence limiting themselves of the help they can provide to their patients by not providing subluxation-based care. The U.S. House of Representatives have even accepted the presence and scientific evidence of subluxation. When they passed chiropractic care through the Veterans Health Administration, in the bill it states that this is for the care of subluxation care. This is even a diagnosable code included in the ICD-10 codes: M99.01-07. In essence, if you have a critic of chiropractic care or someone questioning your choice in health care; whether they are your medical doctor, friend, family, or co-worker, they certainly have not read the literature and evidence of subluxation and the results that chiropractic care provides.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 2: Restrictions of Movement and static do commonly occur in the human spine and have been scientifically defined in the literature as vertebral subluxation complex-VSC PART 1. - The Mind-Body Connection</image:title>
<image:caption>The mind-body connection is a fundamental principle that recognizes the intricate relationship between our mental and physical states. In the context of chiropractic care and premise #2, this connection holds significant importance. The mind and body are not separate entities but rather a unified system that constantly influences and interacts with each other. Our thoughts, emotions, and mental states can profoundly impact our physical well-being, just as our physical condition can shape our mental and emotional experiences. Premise #2 emphasizes the role of consciousness and innate intelligence in maintaining optimal health and function. The mind-body connection is a key aspect of this premise, as it acknowledges the influence of our mental and emotional states on the body's ability to self-regulate and heal. Through chiropractic adjustments and other holistic approaches, chiropractors aim to remove interference from the nervous system, allowing the innate intelligence to function optimally. By addressing physical imbalances and misalignments, chiropractors can positively impact not only the body but also the mind, promoting a state of overall well-being. Furthermore, the mind-body connection highlights the importance of adopting a holistic approach to health and wellness. By recognizing the interconnectedness of our mental and physical aspects, we can better understand and address the root causes of various health concerns, rather than merely treating symptoms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 2: Restrictions of Movement and static do commonly occur in the human spine and have been scientifically defined in the literature as vertebral subluxation complex-VSC PART 1. - What is Consciousness</image:title>
<image:caption>Consciousness is a fundamental aspect of our existence, yet it remains a complex and multifaceted concept. In the context of Dr. Chestnut’s premise #2, consciousness is understood as the innate intelligence that governs the body's functions and processes. This innate intelligence is not confined to the brain alone but is present throughout the entire body, guiding and coordinating its intricate systems. Consciousness is often associated with our subjective experiences, thoughts, emotions, and awareness. However, in the chiropractic wellness paradigm, it extends beyond the realm of subjective experience and encompasses the body's ability to maintain homeostasis, heal itself, and adapt to changing environments. This innate intelligence is responsible for the incredible coordination and communication between the various systems of the body, ensuring that they work in harmony to sustain life and promote overall well-being. The recognition of consciousness as an integral part of our being has profound implications for our understanding of health and wellness. It suggests that true healing and optimal function cannot be achieved solely through physical interventions but require a holistic approach that acknowledges and supports the innate intelligence that governs our bodies. By aligning with this intelligence and removing interference or blockages, the body can tap into its inherent healing potential and achieve a state of optimal function and well-being.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 2: Restrictions of Movement and static do commonly occur in the human spine and have been scientifically defined in the literature as vertebral subluxation complex-VSC PART 1. - Innate Intelligence</image:title>
<image:caption>The innate intelligence is a fundamental concept in chiropractic philosophy, referring to the inherent wisdom and organizing principle within every living organism. It is believed to be the driving force behind the body's ability to maintain health, adapt to changes, and heal itself. This innate intelligence is closely tied to consciousness, as it is the manifestation of the mind-body connection. According to chiropractic principles, the innate intelligence is responsible for coordinating and regulating all bodily functions, from the intricate processes of cellular metabolism to the complex systems of the nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system. It is this innate intelligence that allows the body to function as a harmonious whole, constantly striving for balance and optimal health. In the context of chiropractic care, the innate intelligence is of utmost importance. Chiropractors have found that subluxations can alter and interfere with the proper transmission of nerve impulses, thereby disrupting the innate intelligence's ability to communicate effectively with various parts of the body. By addressing these subluxations through chiropractic adjustments, chiropractors aim to remove any interference and restore the free flow of communication, allowing the innate intelligence to function optimally. The innate intelligence is not a separate entity or force, but rather an inherent property of life itself. It is present in every cell, tissue, and organ, working tirelessly to maintain homeostasis and facilitate healing processes. By recognizing and respecting the innate intelligence, chiropractors seek to support the body's natural ability to heal and achieve optimal well-being, rather than relying solely on external interventions or treatments.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 2: Restrictions of Movement and static do commonly occur in the human spine and have been scientifically defined in the literature as vertebral subluxation complex-VSC PART 1. - Chiropractic Adjustments and Consciousness</image:title>
<image:caption>Chiropractic adjustments are a central component of the chiropractic wellness paradigm and play a crucial role in influencing consciousness and the innate intelligence. The human body is a remarkable system, governed by an inherent wisdom known as the innate intelligence, which coordinates and regulates all bodily functions, including the nervous system. Subluxations in the spine can cause interference and disrupt the flow of vital nerve impulses, leading to various health issues and imbalances. By restoring proper spinal alignment and nervous system function, chiropractic adjustments facilitate the free flow of communication between the brain and the body. This enhanced communication allows the innate intelligence to operate at its full potential, enabling the body to heal itself, adapt to stress, and maintain optimal function. Moreover, chiropractic adjustments may positively influence consciousness by reducing tension, stress, and interference within the nervous system. When the body is free from these hindrances, individuals may experience heightened awareness, improved focus, and a greater sense of overall well-being. The potential benefits of chiropractic adjustments extend beyond physical health and may encompass mental, emotional, and even spiritual aspects of an individual's life. By aligning the body and removing interference, chiropractic care can unlock the body's innate healing abilities and promote a state of harmony and balance, ultimately supporting the overall wellness paradigm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 1: Chiropractic represents a distinct natural, holistic, vitalistic, conservative, and rational health care paradigm that is both philosophically logical and scientifically valid. - Welcome the first premise that is presented in our series of diving into Dr. James L. Chestnut’s work of “The 14 Foundational Premises for the Scientific and Philosophical Validation of the Chiropractic Wellness Paradigm.” Dr. James Chestnut is one of the leading philosophical and scientific doctors in the chiropractic profession. Our review of his concepts will hopefully give you all a deeper understanding of what chiropractic is and why your choice in chiropractic is not only a valid choice for your foundational health care but is the wisest decision.</image:title>
<image:caption>What do we mean by foundational health care? We mean the choices and activities that you do on a regular basis to promote good health, not merely trying to remedy an illness. These things include consistent good nutritional habits, regular exercise, good hygiene, good spiritual and emotional connection, great sleeping habits, and yes… consistent wellness chiropractic care. Most of these suggestions are almost common since, but lets dive into why chiropractic is a philosophically logical and scientifically valid form of actual HEALTH care option for you!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“In the area of health, chiropractors begin with a different set of assumptions, use different theoretical explanations, embrace a different philosophy, pose different questions and use different language and different therapeutic solutions than medicine.” “Therefore chiropractic does not, in a strict sense, treat diseases, it treats the patient with the purpose of returning the body to a normal (homeostatic) state.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 1: Chiropractic represents a distinct natural, holistic, vitalistic, conservative, and rational health care paradigm that is both philosophically logical and scientifically valid. - Philosophies of Chiropractic</image:title>
<image:caption>Vitalism: “Biological forces are directed by a non-mechanical, supernatural, or vitalistic force.” Physics and chemistry are under the law of entropy. This is that all matter in the universe will become more disorganized over time. All organisms (life) operates outside of this bio-physical force that we do not completely understand yet. All life has an innate intelligence and vital force (life force) to heal and to organize itself. “Health comes from inside-out.” Holism: “The whole is bigger than the sum of its parts”. Every cell in our body works independently and co-dependently. One system in our body does not work on its own and affects other systems in return. “The neuromusculoskeletal system is the means through which we experience and express our humanity and individuality, our intellect, every feeling, belief, hope, and fear and every ethical, moral, and even scientific principle” - (Korr) Naturalism: The body is built upon nature’s order. This is seen through the body’s interaction with our environment. The body is also able to heal itself with what nature provides. If it can be helped, it should not be tampered with, with drugs and surgery. Conservatism: “Intervention should be restricted whenever possible to those things that facilitate the body’s own healing/health capacity.” If you ever wondered why our doctors say lets see how you respond even though “your pain” is still there. Trusting the process, and letting your body heal after removing the most influential thing holding it back, will almost always produce a better and longer lasting result. :) Critical Rationalism: “Reason and logic provide the best intellectual tools for organizing the data collected by the senses.” Asking the right questions based on the prior principles will lead to the correct answer in finding health.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Premise 1: Chiropractic represents a distinct natural, holistic, vitalistic, conservative, and rational health care paradigm that is both philosophically logical and scientifically valid. - Chiropractic is Scientifically Valid</image:title>
<image:caption>Association of Chiropractic Colleges Position Paper #1 1996 “The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primary the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.” Kent, Christopher Models of vertebral subluxation: A review. JVSR 1996 1 (1) “Although stimulation of articular mechanoreceptors may exert an analgesic effect, use of manipulation for the episodic, symptomatic treatment of pain is not chiropractic.” There is a lot of research published in chiropractic literature in how chiropractic is a good method of “treatment” in neck pain, low back pain, headaches and migraines, costochondritis, and other overall decreasing the need of pain management drugs. However, most of these studies operate in the allopathic (or medical) philosophical model. Person with pain (diagnosis) gets treatment (chiropractic in this example), person statistically improves symptoms. According to medical providers this is about all that chiropractic is good for. But as mentioned above, this is not chiropractic! Chiropractic is the study of structure and how it affects the function (through the nervous system) of the human body. To fully measure the benefit of chiropractic in it’s true sense we need to look at studies that look at scientifically significant health improvements, not merely making a problem go away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What does this mean for you and your family in choosing chiropractic care as a means to help improve your overall health? Chiropractic care is uniquely different in its philosophy and approach when it comes to health care. It is also scientifically valid beyond chance that there is evidence it can help your family’s physical and mental wellbeing. Chiropractic works! Chiropractic can be a tool for you and your family to support your innate healing ability. Don’t “fire” the fire department! We still need medical doctors and allopathy to help preserve life when toxic stress exceeds our body’s natural ability to repair itself. However, do not look to allopathy to build health upon. Chiropractic is your carpenter! Let’s get building!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Chiropractic - The Big Picture - For those of you who are new to chiropractic, or even those of you who know you like chiropractic because of the results you have achieved from it but don’t really understand why; this is the blog for you! This is the introduction to a new series that we will be exploring together about going over the foundational premises and the scientific and philosophical validation of the Chiropractic Wellness Paradigm. We will be using the works from one of the most influential chiropractors in our profession, Dr. James L. Chestnut B.Ed., M.Sc., D.C., C.C.W.P.</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Chestnut explores and studies the body’s stress response as he believes this is the foundational topic that sets chiropractic apart from other more mainstream medical professions. Allopathy focuses on ‘fighting’ disease and symptom relief that they see as pathology. However, “the scientific fact is that the changes associated with the stress response, although they may result in what allopathy has labeled disease, are absolutely NOT pathological.” -Dr. Chestnut. Looking at only symptoms and ‘disease’ only and applying pharmaceutical interventions only “will never produce health in a patient or improve or prolong life and, worse they leave the cause of the problem unresolved and add a further stressor in the form of physiologically incompatible biochemistry.” It is our opinion, that our patients should seek council from medical providers and their chiropractor. The professions are so uniquely distinct from each other. Our medical friends while they may recommend drugs which can lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and many other things; this is a temporary remedy to insure more dangerous events are prevented. Drugs alone will not allow a healing process to occur, as it is physiologically incompatible biochemistry. It is other, outside-in. An approach that stimulates innate healing from inside-out must be implemented if a person wants to truly change their health state. Chiropractic fits this bill perfectly along with nutrition, exercise, sleep, counseling, PT’s, OT’s, the sun, hydration, and many more. Medical professionals, chiropractors, and patient’s working together is when we see the best results!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Chiropractic - The Big Picture - The Physiology of the Stress Response</image:title>
<image:caption>Not to oversimplify health as the human body, mind, and spirit are very complex in their function and relation to each other; but there are typically two major ‘modes’ that the human body can be in at any given moment. These are ether a stress response which allows our body to engage our environment for protection purposes. This is a critical function as without this physiological response we would surely perish as we would not be able to protect ourselves from the outside world. The other ‘mode’ we can be in is rest/healing/procreation/social and emotional engagement. This mode is essential to life as it helps us heal from stresses imposed on us from our environment, ensures that we sleep well, digest our food well, reproduce, and make calm and healthy relationships. Both of these responses are mediated by the autonomic nervous system.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Blog - Pregnancy Advocacy - Freedom of Choice!</image:title>
<image:caption>Mothers should know that they have the freedom to say no!! Often times, mothers will find an OB medical provider and blindly follow along with what their doctor says they should do. Let us be the first to say, that you have the power to say no and even fire your OB all the way up to birth! How far do we mean that you have the power to say no? You can say no to cervical checks! (This is more for the doctors information to know when to come into the room to catch the baby. Doctor’s convenience not the mothers.) You can choose to eat during labor. Your can choose to move around the room during labor. You can refuse vaccinations during pregnancy. You can refuse vaccinations at birth for your child. You can refuse being induced if you feel like its too soon. (We see many mothers get induced when they were so close to going into labor. If they could have waited 1 to 2 more days they would have probably made it naturally.) You have the right to have a doula! You have the right to ask questions to your OB on things you don’t understand, and you have the right to have true informed consent.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Pregnancy Advocacy - Minimize suffering, Maximize Function!</image:title>
<image:caption>It is awesome when pregnant mothers realize that sacral pain or round ligament pain doesn’t have to be a thing during their pregnancy!! It is even more awesome when we see patient’s health actually improve during their pregnancy instead of the pregnancy taking something from them. Pregnancy is HARD work!! Pregnancy is like running a 9-month long marathon! Another human being is being created and the mother’s biological power is being used to fuel his or her development. Birth is a second marathon at the very end of the pregnancy. So why do we not treat pregnant mothers as athletes! Chiropractic is uniquely positioned to help pregnant mothers through the webster technique. Check out our pregnancy page here! Along with doing our functional neurological assessments powered by Insight CLA scanning technology, chiropractic has proved to help mothers be much more comfortable through their pregnancy and actually achieve a healthier state of being at the end of their pregnancy. It is stated in evidence that chiropractic, specifically the webster technique, improves birth outcomes and we have seen this clinically in our practice. Our care here is actual CARE for the pregnant mother! We don’t take height and weight and send them on their way. We actually take CARE of them through their pregnancy and provide an intervention that benefits their health and the health of their baby.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Pregnancy Advocacy - Eye On The Prize!</image:title>
<image:caption>We advocate for our pregnant patients to have the most natural birth possible as that is what is best for mom and for baby. However, we also don’t shame mothers if their goals for their birth are not in line with ours. Just as mothers have the power to say no to their OB, they also have the power to say no to our “vision” of what the optimal birth is. We respect every single mother that comes through our office. Our ultimate goal for our pregnant patients is to provide world class, personalized chiropractic care; provide education and resources throughout their entire pregnancy; be a source to bounce ideas off of; and to be there for them all the way up to birth and be there for them after birth. The baby is the ultimate prize! Birth is not easy, pregnancy is not easy, being a mother is not easy! But as most things in life, anything that is truly worthwhile is not easy. Children are the world’s biggest and hardest to deal with blessing, and for most, is one of life’s biggest joys. We are honored to be there for our mothers and their children to make sure the traumatic part of pregnancy and birth doesn’t get in the way of the joy a newborn brings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - The Significance of Birth Intervention - Birth trauma is caused by anything that injures the baby during the birthing process. Birth is a traumatic event but also an incredible life giving and new beginnings event! It has been found by our Mid-wife colleges here in Colorado Springs that mothers that give a natural vaginal birth seem to have healthier and happier babies compared to children birthed with birth trauma. The area that is most commonly injured during birth is the spine (especially the upper neck), shoulders, and head. How do these areas get injured you ask? Great question! The following all can cause strain or injury: Prolonged labor, otherwise called dystocia Bad positioning of baby in the uterus. This can cause extension of the neck, or extra forces in the baby’s mid-back if in a transverse position, or mom isn’t able to move during labor not allowing for a dynamic uterine-pelvic environment to allow baby to move and adapt during the birthing process. A very fast labor! Believe it or not a fast labor can cause injury to your baby as the proper loads where not able to be placed on the baby’s cervical spine to prepare him/her to fight gravity, or the uterine contraction is so forceful that it puts excess force onto baby. Medical intervention: this includes vacuum, forceps, doctors hands on the head and pulling, and c-section. The reason? Natural vaginal birth places compressive forces on the baby’s spine to prepare him/her to fight gravity. These birth interventions do the opposite and place traction forces onto the baby’s cervical spine to a massive degree. This places forces in the upper cervical spine which is the most sensitive and susceptible to injury. Depending on what area was injured during birth can cause different dysfunctions and symptoms.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Blog - The Significance of Birth Intervention</image:title>
<image:caption>We will break down the different areas of the body that can be injured potentially with birth trauma and what it means for you baby. Upper Neck (Cervical Spine) Lets start with the upper neck area called the upper cervical spine. This area is torqued and distracted the most with birth intervention and has dramatic implications to the baby’s nervous system. The upper cervical spine has the most density of sensory neurons. This helps us orient us to space in our environment and stimulation to this area helps stimulate and develop the brain in a newborn. When this area is injured and creates a fixation/subluxation the baby’s nervous system lacks vital information. Birth trauma also creates a neuro-signal called nociception which is the signal for pain. This creates a stress response in the baby’s nervous system and shuts down function of the Vagus Nerve. The Vagus nerve is the major rest, digest, sleep, social, and emotional center of the nervous system. Understanding this, it makes perfect since that we see great improvements with colic, constipation, ear infections, sleep, torticollis, and breast feeding with adjusting newborns in the upper cervical area.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - The Significance of Birth Intervention - Upper Mid-back (Thoracic Spine)</image:title>
<image:caption>Extractions such as c-section, vacuum, or big hands also create tension in the upper thoracic spine and the shoulders try to pass the birth canal. Malposition of baby in the uterus where the baby’s head is held into extension during labor will place extra force in the lower cervical and upper thoracic spine during contractions. Transverse malposition can cause tension in the lower thoracic spine. Implications of extra stress on this part of the nervous system can cause dysfunction in the cardio-respiratory system; brachial plexus injuries that can affect the function of the arms; upper digestive system causing excess gas, bloating, and colic; and dysfunction in the fight or flight response by impacting adrenal gland function. The fight or flight response part of the nervous system is located in this thoracic spine area. Irritation from injury from stress in this area of the nervous system can cause severe implications of over alertness, irritation, or even severe fatigue in infants. Respiratory function can be greatly impacted as mentioned before. Living in Colorado Springs at high elevation many parents are told that their baby is having oxygen issues due to the elevation. However, babies grow in their mother, who is living at this high elevation. The adaptive changes that are needed to ensure good oxygenation at this elevation has already taken place and did so at a gradual pace. Most respiratory function issues are ether due to inhalation of meconium from birth or from functional issues in the respiratory system (most common). We see in our clinic that removing nerve interference from the upper thoracic spine has helped many children get off oxygen and thrive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - The Significance of Birth Intervention - Lower Back and Pelvis</image:title>
<image:caption>Injury to this area is a little less common in birth unless they present in a breach position, but we tend to find this area is the second most common area that shows dysfunction in a newborn’s nervous system. Why is this? Understanding that the nervous system is a completely interconnected system brings to light the implications of this area of the nervous system. Dysfunction in one area of the nervous system will cause the body will adapt and try to compensate to make the entire system run better despite the dysfunction. It just so happens that the connective tissue called dura mater has its anchoring points in the upper cervical spine and in the sacrum. When injury happens to the upper cervical spine (most common injury in birth intervention) this creates tension in the entire neuro-spinal system. This will create dysfunctions in the lower back and pelvis as the newborn tries to adapt to the dysfunction in the upper neck. This adaptation can cause subluxation in this area of the neuro-spinal system and have the same neurological interference consequences as an area that was injured directly! The sacrum is secretly known in the chiropractic profession as the “poop button”. Neurological dysfunction in this area can decrease function of the lower digestive tract and anal function. This can cause constipation and therefore colic and irritability. We can’t count the number of times we have adjusted an infant or new baby’s sacrum and ether during the adjustment or before our families leave our chiropractic clinic they have to go change a poopy diaper!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - The Significance of Birth Intervention - We hope you enjoyed our blog of birth intervention and its implications. The good news is that anything that has been mentioned in this blog can be reversed!! Babies are extremely resilient and adaptable to care unlike adults. Early intervention to help correct the damage that may have been inflicted from birth injury is key to making sure no long lasting health implications take root. If you are expecting, have a new baby, or know someone with a new baby, share this blog with them or refer them to our clinic so we can measure their nervous system function and help their baby thrive! :)</image:title>

      <image:title>Our Blog - Happy Father’s Day!! - Band of Brothers!</image:title>
<image:caption>From my own experience (Dr. Chris Eddy speaking here), men are much more likely to operate on an island. Life takes hold with your work, your marriage, raising children, hobbies, and it can feel like there is no time to invest in a brotherhood relationship. You have lots to worry about and taking time for yourself to have other men relationships seems low priority. We put this as the number one tip in making sure you take care of yourself for a reason. Iron sharpens iron. If you don’t have a system of support outside of your home, your knife is going to get dull and your going to loose motivation, steam, and joy in the things you are thankful for. Other men will keep you focused on your vision for yourself, your family, and hold you accountable. They can be there on your low days and remind you to lead with kindness and keep your eye on your morals when things get tough instead of falling into temptation. And they can be there to help celebrate with you when life is good! Which makes accomplishments that more meaningful! So find yourself men companions/friends that you yourself would like to be like. That hold the qualities listed above. If you have men that do not support you in the direction you are trying to go in your life, dump em’! Or mentor them…</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Blog - Happy Father’s Day!! - 2. Invest in Your Physical Health</image:title>
<image:caption>Testosterone as a population is decreasing with each generation. Gen Z and Millennials have significantly lower testosterone than the generation before us. There are several reasons for this but in our opinion, modern life has become too physically comfortable. Being physically lazy is extremely easy! Add in mental stresses, less connection in the community (social stress), and easily accessible not good for you food; you have to be intentional and have a PLAN to stay on top of your physical well-being. Make time to workout, say no to indulging in foods that aren’t good for you, and seek help when needed. We see a lot of father’s in our clinic that have physical goals to have more energy, keep up with their kids, and to just feel like a man! Stresses of life can build up and be stored in your nervous system. This stuck stress can mess with metabolic functions, gut health, weight management, mental health, and immune system struggles. Chiropractic is a holistic in-side-out approach of making sure your body is ABLE to work as it is intended making your efforts on the rest of you physical health plan work to the fullest! It’s kind of like increasing the interest rate of return of your health efforts. It is amazing how just by getting your physical health corrected how much more powerful you will feel and many of the struggles in your life self-correct. Don’t neglect this one man!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Blog - Happy Father’s Day!! - 3. List Out Your Priorities</image:title>
<image:caption>If you are like me, as a man I feel successful when I am achieving goals or standing by the kind of man I want to be, in the interests that I hold important. We have a lot of voices in our head of what success looks like. Depending in what phase of life we are in will allow what is considered successful to be achievable, and other times not so much. Ask yourself, what phase of life am I in? What is important to me in this phase of life, and where do I want to be in 5 years from now. That answer may be different from year to year. Your goals will be very different when you have small children vs. school age, vs. grown children. So drown out the noise and choose what success looks like for you! Maybe its to be very present and available when your children are young. Maybe it’s an example of hard work and love for your family and to bring your children into that. Maybe it’s mentoring, traveling, or strengthening your marriage (this should always be a goal in my opinion). The power of getting your priories in alignment with what you want your life to look like, is it reduces stress! I remember that when my wife (Dr. Jenna) and I were in the process of adopting our second son, I was stressing a LOT as we did not have the capacity to save for a house or retirement or anything really! However, as soon as I set my priorities for the phase of life I was, I knew that in the next 2-3 years, our family goal was to bring our son home. This was liberating as I could poor into my wife, my first born, and into my patients and didn’t stress so much about financial goals, or where I am in my career. It was more important for me to be available to my family and completing our adoption than what the “text book” success formula that I was raised with. So whatever you have in mind as a version of success. Ask yourself, is this really what I want? Or is it what I think I should want. Get your vision and priorities (God, wife, kids, work, community, exc.) set for you, and then live in that! You will have a since of fulfillment, have more joy, and love yourself and your family more!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Self Care for Mothers - Get help!</image:title>
<image:caption>Mothers take the responsibility of “make sure everyone’s needs are met” to heart and often fail to take the help they need. Tip #1 is get help! You may feel like you are on an island but you don’t have to be! Ask help from your spouse, get help to help reduce stuck stress such as a neurological chiropractor (relives stuck in stress in the nervous system), physical therapy (muscular and tissue work to combated adaptations your body has done to stress), massage therapy (lymphatic and relaxation work), acupuncture (energy work that affects multiple systems), and counseling (mental stress and much more). Health care is much more than getting labs done each year. There are many tools out there that help promote well being, relieve stress, and optimize your mental, physical, and spiritual health. It is amazing how different you may feel if you can get your physical health feeling better, not ignore your mental health, and ask for help with your daily activities. You’ll be more energized, feel more at peace, and ready to tackel your responsibilities more willingly. That’s a pretty good start in the right direction!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Blog - Self Care for Mothers - 2. Grace</image:title>
<image:caption>Having grace for yourself is one of the best gifts you can possibly give for yourself! This addresses the expectation part in mothering. We know you are pulled in a million different directions and sometimes it feels like you can never do right by everyone. This brings on shame and guilt. Your loving husband can give you free time to spend on yourself, but all you are thinking while your away is how you’re disappointing everyone, and hence the time becomes not fulfilling, not regenerative, and not self-love. Grace can look like many forms such as: it’s okay if your kids don’t eat that perfect meal, every meal of every day, that the house isn’t in perfect order because you spent time playing and teaching your kids (or that you just sat and relaxed a bit), that every celebration or holiday is always a hallmark experience but mostly filled with love and family, or maybe you forgot to write that thank you letter and just said thank you the next time you saw that person. Moral of the story is you don’t have to be perfect momma! The biggest and most impactful way to give yourself grace is to make your mind on how you are going to mother and then go for it. Society, friends, and family will all have opinions on how you should do things as a mother, a spouse, a career woman, a church goer, the list goes on! There is wisdom from listing to your mother and other elders, there is power in new knowledge that has come out in our generation, but ultimately this is your life! We know that you love your kids and spouse. Take all this information and decide how you want things to be done. Make your way of life yours! And then do it! Then, give yourself grace when you don’t meet other people’s expectations because you are doing it your way! This will save your heart, calm your anxiety, and give space to focus on what matters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Self Care for Mothers - 3. Focus on the moment</image:title>
<image:caption>Mothers are often the planners of the family. This can sometimes make is difficult to live in the moment and steal joy from making memories with your kids and spouse. It is important to be intentional with our time and how we spend our time in our mind. Use a calendar, involve your spouse in decision making (this might mean that things are not done completely the way you would do them… but that’s okay!), and fight to make sure your family isn’t too “booked”. Fight for space where your family has nothing to do! It is good for kids to be bored sometimes. It sparks imagination and can be the freest and most fun times to spend with your kids. If your family has room for nothing to happen, it also means that is time where you get to be you in your family. You are no longer just a means of food, transportation, cleaner, organizer, and teacher in the home, you get to be you! Yes you are a mother, but it is important for your kids to see their mom as a human being with their own personal quarks, wants, dreams, and personality. Your spouse wants you to you. So give yourself space in your schedule for that to happen!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Our Approach with Spectrum Children. Chiropractic’s role in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Autism. - What we would like to do in this blog post is to explain CJ Chiropractic’s approach to sensory processing disorder’s, spectrum disorders, and others such as OCD and even anxiety and depression.</image:title>
<image:caption>Every clinic is different and level of expertise is also different. We believe that we have come up with a comprehensive approach to children with these issues and have seen great clinical outcomes for 7 years now. There are areas where we work with other providers to get more detailed advice and care in their specific fields. We hope you find our process hope inspiring!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Our Approach with Spectrum Children. Chiropractic’s role in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Autism. - Heart Rate Variability (HRV)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the first neuro-scan we perform in our office after our doctors go through a detailed history of your child or yourself. This scan measures the length of time from one heartbeat to the next heartbeat. Many are surprised that your heartbeat is not symmetrical, but rather varies from beat to beat to adapt to your environment. This is extremely valuable as if this was not the case, as we would go to stand up and start walking, our heart wouldn’t naturally speed up its output to match the demand of oxygen that the body needs. In fact the more variable within a specific range (measured from studies) the healthier a person is. This detects any imbalance in the autonomic nervous system and how much reserve energy/activity the nervous system has available to adapt to their environment. The Cleveland Clinic explains HRV nicely here. Children who struggle with sensory processing or spectrum disorders often have low HRV scores. This makes sense as many of the symptoms of children with these conditions are impulsivity, big emotional responses without good emotional regulation, gut and immune system challenges, and social emotional challenges. All of these symptoms can be contributed to an imbalanced autonomic nervous system (namely decreased Vagus N function = rest, digest, social-emotional nerve). We use these findings to measure how adaptable a child is and their ability to heal and respond to care. Many parents can get rapped up in doing so many therapies and nutritional supplements, which are all good, but their child doesn’t have the energy to respond or take all of this good therapy and use it effectively. This is a big finding in our office and helps coordinate what is the best course of action for each child individually.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Our Approach with Spectrum Children. Chiropractic’s role in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Autism. - Thermography</image:title>
<image:caption>Thermography has been used in chiropractic for a very long time. The technology to capture this data has vastly improved over the decades. Thermography allows us to capture infrared heat that is coming off of the body. Temperature regulation is one of the basic functions that the autonomic nervous system is in charge of as we are warm blooded humans. The way temperature regulation happens is by Vaso-dilation (making the blood vessels bigger) or by Vaso-constriction (making the blood vessels smaller). We talk a lot about how chiropractic subluxations can cause disruption in the sensory nervous system on our main page Sensory Processing Disorder. This disruption in the sensory system makes it difficult for our autonomic nervous system to coordinate temperature regulation well. For this reason, thermography detects incoordination of the autonomic nervous system at a local level along the neuro-spinal system. This is a big red flag that there is interference in the sensory system around this area. Not only this, but the same nerve root that regulates local temperature regulation of the skin travels further to other organ systems associated with the spinal level that it is coming from. This explains why a child’s gut, immune system, sugar regulation, lung function and liver and kidney function could be less than optimal depending on where the autonomic nervous system incoordination is located. There are degrees of severity of incoordination in the autonomic nervous system and can tell us how deep the chiropractic subluxation is rooted into the child’s nervous system. Please refer to our Sensory Processing Disorder page to see the effects of the chiropractic subluxation and how it contributes/cause sensory processing disorders and spectrum disorders.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Our Approach with Spectrum Children. Chiropractic’s role in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Autism. - Electromyography (EMG)</image:title>
<image:caption>EMG measures the amount of electrical energy coming out of the muscles in a specific area. This is relevant to our chiropractors at CJ Chiropractic and your child because it gives us insight into how efficient, coordinated, and active your child’s nervous system is. This test is not able to use until your child is about 4 years old due to compliance, but patients that we are able to perform this test on and struggle with sensory processing disorders and spectrum disorders tend to show very high energy states. In a balanced nervous system, the body is extremely effective at holding itself against gravity. However, if chiropractic subluxations are present, the sensory nervous system is load, incorrect, and can be noxious to the brain. Due to a lack of good information and an excess of noisy information, the neuro-motor system is affected. If there is a lot of noise coming into the brain, then there will be a lot of activity that comes out! This is why when your sensory child runs around the room like a crazy kid, they are really trying to release the extra noise in their nervous system and calm their brain down. This is also why screens seem to “calm down” your child’s brain. When in reality, the screen stimulation is matching the speed of your child’s amped up brain. Hense the melt down when the screen turns off. This scan allows our chiropractors to see areas of excess energy and inefficiencies and coordinate their adjustments for your child to bring a state of ease to their nervous system.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Our Approach with Spectrum Children. Chiropractic’s role in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Autism. - Nutrition is undoubtedly an important part in helping children with sensory processing disorders and spectrum disorders. A healthy rounded diet should be a top priority for any child but especially for these children. What happens if your child only likes mac and cheese and refuses to eat anything you set in front of them due to their condition (we feel you parents!)? This could be due to myo-facial struggles, phycological issues, or other struggles. This is where we work with other doctors and therapists such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and councilors to practice getting your child to broaden their normal diet.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nutritional supplements are also very useful to help increase certain nutritional components that help children with sensory processing disorders and spectrum disorders. Our chiropractors look at organ systems that need to improve function to help your child flourish! Gut- peracetic and yeast infection needs to be addressed and corrected with gut protocols to bring balance to the micro-biome in their gut. Due to decreased vagus nerve tone, gut motility was slowed down which allowed poop to not get out of their body, leading to bad bugs to take over. The gut becomes inflamed and puts a toxic stress on the central nervous system, making their sensory issues worse, and then the nervous system stress further disrupts gut function. And so goes on the cascade. Histamine- The result of an over active immune system. Children with sensory processing and spectrum disorders often have a hyper-active, systemic immune responses. Essentially, everything is inflamed throughout their body which will also affect the immune system cells located in the brain! Increase in chronic inflammation puts stress on the nervous system and can even cause neuron cells to die. We take care of this with different products, but we really love Antronex and Super EFF from Standard Process. Protomorphagens (PMG): PMG’s used to be called organ therapy or oral therapy by naturopaths. PMG’s are little nuclear proteins that your body tissues release into the surrounding fluids. This is increased when a tissue is injured or inflamed. If too much of this PMG protein is released, the immune system will start to create antibodies for the PMG. This can cause an auto-immune response to the tissue that is in question. By consuming PMG’s, the antibodies will bind with the ingested PMG instead of the organ that we are trying to heal. This is a big game changer in a nutritional protocol that we provide for our kids with sensory processing and spectrum disorders by providing Neurotrophin PMG or Neuroplex by Standard Process. Click here for more information about PMG’s from Dr. Royal Lee, founder of the Standard Process Company. Other specific recommendations. Healing with a provider is a relationship. Every child is different and things change over time. Once one system heals and starts to function better, another system is ready to be worked on until the body as a whole finds homeostasis/balance. The beauty of working with a chiropractor with a care plan is that we are able to evaluate and adjust your child’s care plan on the fly as their body and health state changes over time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Our Approach with Spectrum Children. Chiropractic’s role in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Autism. - Primitive reflexes are present when your child is a newborn. These are essential for your kids survival as they allow them to now be able to roll over and suffocate tummy down, be able to hang on to mom by flexing their hands and feet, stimulate feeding behavior when they feel like they are close to mom, amongst other things. As your child matures and their nervous system is ready to move on to more sophisticated activities such as rolling, crawling, and walking; these primitive reflexes need to be exhausted out. As primitive reflexes go away, it also gives access to higher brain centers. This is why gross motor function is the cornerstone of further fine motor, speech, and cognitive development. In fact, so much so that a delay in gross motor function will delay the development of other neurological functions!</image:title>
<image:caption>With injury, such as birth injury, sickness, certain shots…, or normal childhood injuries, it can reinstate primitive reflexes. When primitive reflexes are active it will lock a child’s nervous system into a more “baby like” state. Hind brain activity is dominate which leads to more impulsivity, heightened emotions, and decreases their ability to think with more cognitive brain centers. So yes you are not crazy parents when you feel like you are talking to a brick wall with your kids if this is happening. Your child is looking for their next need or threat, and not really thinking about “why did that happen” or “why did I feel that way” when your trying to reason with them. We test and guide parents to stimulate existing primitive reflexes at home to help exhaust these reflexes out and help unlock their child’s higher cognitive abilities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Tips on a healthy Gut and Immune System!</image:title>
<image:caption>This is one of our favorite topics here at CJ Chiropractic and a lot of our early success in Colorado Springs was caring for patients who had gut struggles and therefore immune system challenges (if they thought they had a sluggish immune system or not). This continues to be a primary health struggle that we help patients with today or something that just happens to improve when we are working on other areas of our patient’s health. Gut health can usually indicate the health of a person. It can affect mental health, teeth and gum health, heart health, and is directly linked to Allergies and immune system function. The gut is one of the biggest immune system organs in our body. It not only kills unwanted visitors with acid in our stomach but then it has to deal with immune system cells lining the intestinal wall and an army of good bacteria that kind of like living there! The best immune system defense is to kill any baddies before it even gets inside of our body. It’s an incredible system that protects us from the outside world and aids in nourishing our bodies.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Tips on a healthy Gut and Immune System!</image:title>
<image:caption>Food is the best medicine when it comes to the gut! There is some incredible supplements and detoxification regimens out there now-a-days but nothing can really beat a delicious organic cob salad with cage free eggs! Eating whole foods does two things: less toxins that where used on your food and the food itself is more nutrient dense and typically has other benefits like containing fiber and other phytonutrients that decrease inflammation. This has the net effect of not bogging down your system by decreasing your toxic load and feeding those good bacteria. Food is by far the biggest and most impactful thing you can do! It is also the most affordable option to help your health because, you’re going to eat anyway, just move your food spending to more healthier options. Now, I did give you a little wiggle room for the occasional ice cream or pizza “treat yourself” day. But that is the name of the game, is those meals/treats should be occasional. Let those treat your soul/sanity but let real food feed your body and mind. From experience this split of healthy eating and treating yourself occasionally produces the longest lasting results and is sustainable. And sustainable change is what we are all about here at CJ Chiropractic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Tips on a healthy Gut and Immune System! - Yes, shameless plug here! We mentioned before that we help people with immune system function and digestive system health. How? By balancing their nervous systems! There are many inputs from the central nervous system to the enteric nervous system (your gut has a whole nervous system!). The health of the gut can dramatically have central nervous system affects mentioned at the beginning of this blog, but the central nervous system can affect the gut in dramatic ways as well. It really is a relationship between the two. You’ve ever been super stressed and got a stomachache? You experienced a decrease in activity in what is called the Vagus nerve. The Vagus nerve has many functions as it is the main messenger nerve for the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, social emotional system). Increase in Vagus nerve activity increases gastric motility, decreased inflammation, and a sharper immune system response indicated by decrease in cases of cancer and other mortality with high Vagus nerve activity.</image:title>
<image:caption>This study on mice sings this beautifully. One group had their Vagus nerve cut, one group was left alone, and one group had their Vagus nerve stimulated. The Vagus Nerve stimulation group had decreased cases of cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, irritable bowel syndrome, and death. The group that had their Vagus nerve cut had the opposite effect. RIP little mice….</image:caption>

Struggles with fertility can bring on feelings of self-doubt, shame, brokenness, and depression. It can feel very lonely even though 1 in 5 women are unable to get pregnant after one year of trying according to the CDC.</image:title>
<image:caption>Children are a blessing and is arguably the biggest thing us humans can do to leave a legacy here on earth. <image:title>Our Blog - Fertility: The misunderstood struggle.</image:title>
<image:caption>In asking the question in a more holistic since, what is responsible for the entire body to be interconnected? How does our body know when to digest food, or to speed our heart rate up during exercise or when we see something that excites us? Look no further than the nervous system! The nervous system is the system that makes us, us. It perceives our environment and our internal environment, makes motor plans to speak, reach for things, run, walk, and move our food through our digestive track. It sends physiological messages that alters the epigenetic expression of our cells that can alter functions such as absorption of food in the digestive system, tell our pancreas to release enzymes, the gull bladder to excrete bile, mobilize immunity cells, controls the hormonal balance in the body through the pituitary gland, speed up the heart under stress, slow down the heart when you try to calm down, and can control cell function throughout the entire body.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Blog - Fertility: The misunderstood struggle.</image:title>
<image:caption>Great, thanks for the neuro-plasticity discussion but how is this getting to reproduction and getting pregnant? Just as the body can learn good things, it also learns how to combat stress. However, in doing so the nervous system can get stuck in a more alert state as an adaptation to stress that it has been exposed to. When we are exposed to stress, the nervous system is put into a state of fight, halt, or flight. This changes the physiology of our body by shutting down digestion, immunity, sleep, and reproduction; and ramping up adrenaline, quickening the heart rate, and mobilizing energy from the liver. In the processing of adapting to the stressful event, neuropathways can get stuck (or more dominate) in this stressful state.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Blog - Fertility: The misunderstood struggle. - Through chiropractic adjustments, your nervous system becomes more balanced, at ease, and as a result your nervous system isn’t stimulated in a state of arousal. Meaning that it is safe for more health driven functions to take over. This results in better neuro-hormonal regulation, better immunity function, better cell and epigenetic expression of cells.</image:title>
<image:caption>Maybe….maybe there isn’t anything wrong with your body. There isn’t anything wrong with you! Maybe, you are struggling getting pregnant because your nervous system is stuck in a state of protection, and it isn’t safe to get pregnant. Is it possible that infertility is an intelligent response based on the information that your nervous system is receiving?</image:caption>
